Distresses and Treatment/Repairs Methods in Flexible and Rigid Pavements
This online engineering PDH course provides a detailed description on the types of distresses that are encountered in flexible pavements and rigid pavements.
A highway pavement is a structure consisting of superimposed layers of processed materials above the natural soil subgrade, which primary function is to distribute the applied vehicle loads to the subgrade. Pavements provide a smooth and durable all-weather traveling surface that benefits a range of vehicles (cars, trucks, buses, bicycles) and users (commuters, commercial motor carriers, delivery and service providers, local users, leisure travelers).
Surface distress is “any indication of poor or unfavorable pavement performance or signs of impending failure; any unsatisfactory performance of a pavement short of failure” (Highway Research Board). This course provides guidance on distress types, the problem caused by the distress, the possible causes that led to the distress, and suggested repair methods. Additionally, treatment methods are suggested to preserve the integrity of the pavement.
This 5 PDH online course is applicable to transportation engineers who are interested in learning about the principles to be considered when selecting and designing roadway pavements.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Familiarizing with the components of flexible, rigid and composite pavements
- Learning about treatment methods for flexible pavements
- Learning about treatment methods for rigid pavements
- Understanding the problem, causes and repair for flexible pavement distress
- Understanding the problem, causes and repair for rigid pavement distress
