Pressure Vessel Safety
This online engineering PDH course provides an overview of the design of pressure vessels, the cracking in pressure vessels and the non-destructive tests performed for detection.
Pressure vessels made of carbon or low-alloy steel are designed to store their contents under pressure and have inherent risks. In 1905, a pressure vessel accident led to the creation of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. This course introduces Pressure Vessel Safety and testing, and how they are covered by ASME, API, and OSHA.
The API code contains the rules for the design, fabrication, inspection, and testing of pressure vessels. The OSHA technical manual covers the design of pressure vessels and low-pressure storage tanks. The nondestructive tests (NDT) are performed by certified pressure vessel inspectors and are of two types: the surface and volumetric methods. These include the visual examination, liquid penetrant test, magnetic particle test, radiography test and ultrasonic test.
